BEIJING, China (CNN) - About 2,000 troops have been dispatched to work on a dam in China's Sichuan province, the epicenter of Monday's 7.9-magnitude quake, state-run media reported.

The Zipingpu dam is in "great danger," state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

State-run China.org reported that earthquake caused "severe cracks" in the dam, which is on the Zipingpu Reservoir. Xinhua said the Sichuan government's emergency response office had reported cracks on the dam's surface Tuesday.

The Ministry of Water Resources had set up a command center there "to safely discharge the reservoir's rising waters and guarantee that the damage posed no threat to Dujiangyan and the neighboring Chengdu Plain," Xinhua reported.
