(CNN) — Officials expressed cautious optimism Tuesday that wildfires in Florida, including a blaze that charred more than 3,500 acres in the city of Palm Bay, will remain contained, even as assessment teams were working to catalogue the damage done by the flames. “A majority of the fires are contained,” said Yvonne Martinez, spokesman for the Palm Bay Fire Department. “We do have pockets of flare-up and live activity.” Crews were attempting to maintain control and minimize flare-ups, she said. Wind conditions were better than those on Monday, said Palm Bay Fire Marshal Mike Couture. He said information was still being received, but estimated about 100 homes suffered some degree of damage. Damage assessment teams were using a grid system to examine the scorched areas, he said. |
