Florida wildfires close interstate, force evacuationPosted: 01:50 AM ET
(CNN) - Wildfires scorched two counties in eastern Florida Sunday, closing a major interstate and forcing the evacuation of some coastal residents. The Florida Highway Patrol is expected to make a determination early Monday morning whether to re-open portions of I-95 and U.S. Highway 1 for morning commuters. In Volusia County, officials ordered the evacuation of about 400 homes near LPGA Boulevard. Firefighters took 300 animals from a shelter and placed them at a fairground nearby. In Brevard County, three brush fires were threatening homes. The largest consumed 1,900 acres near the town of Malabar. The other two burned 180 acres in Cocoa. |
