(CNN) — Firefighters have made some progress in battling three of four weekend wildfires that have scorched two eastern Florida counties, but the largest blaze was still defying efforts to contain it Monday, authorities said. That fire, in an area in Brevard County, had scorched about 2,300 acres near the town of Malabar, said Orlando Dominguez of the Brevard County Fire Rescue. The wildfire is in a rural area and threatened only a few homes, he said. But a blaze in Volusia County has led to the evacuation of about 590 homes near LPGA Boulevard, and people in another 85 homes are on standby to be ready to evacuate, according to Fred Godawa of the Daytona Beach Fire Department. That fire has burned through 600 to 1,000 acres was about 20 percent contained, Godawa said Two other fires in Brevard County had burned about 200 acres in Cocoa, but were almost completely contained, authorities said. |
