YANGON, Myanmar (CNN) — A boat packed with enough relief supplies for 1,000 people in Myanmar’s cyclone-stricken delta region sank Sunday morning, leaving nearly all of its cargo at the bottom of the muddy river, a Red Cross official said.

“This is a big blow to us,” Joe Lowry told CNN.

The double-decker supply boat apparently hit a submerged tree as it headed to the Irrawaddy Delta town of Bogale, he said.

“It hit the hull and … the ship started taking on water and sank quite quickly,” Lowry said. “The crew managed to get to the safety of an island, along with four Red Cross staff who were on the boat. But we’ve lost most of the cargo, which was enough relief goods for 1,000 people.”
