Window for Myanmar aid opens slightlyPosted: 01:11 PM ET
BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) - After days of stonewalling by the Myanmar government, officials agreed Friday to allow a U.S. cargo plane loaded with cyclone-relief supplies to land in Yangon on Monday, said Gordon Johndroe, White House deputy press secretary. Also Friday, the World Food Programme, which had suspended relief flights after the Myanmar government blocked the U.N. agency from distributing the supplies, said late in the day it would resume emergency airlifts Saturday. However, a senior U.N. official said the WFP has no clearance yet from Myanmar authorities to land at Yangon International Airport, which is a military facility. It was too late on Friday to get the approvals. In addition, Myanmar officials likely will be distracted Saturday by a national constitutional referendum aimed at strengthening the power of the military junta. |
