(CNN) — The U.N. refugee agency issued a warning Friday that it might have to cut back aid programs for “hundreds of thousands” of Iraqis uprooted from their homes unless governments donate millions of dollars more this year. “We will not be able to help hundreds of thousands of the most vulnerable Iraqi refugees and internally displaced if we do not receive funding for the remainder of 2008,” said U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres. “Without this support, the humanitarian crisis we have faced over the past two years may grow even larger.” The UNHCR appealed for $261 million in January. It has received only $134 million and needs to make up the difference — $127 million — either by getting more funds or cutting programs. |
