Rebels sink navy craft in Sri Lanka, military saysPosted: 09:39 PM ET
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNN) - Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels sank a naval craft in the northeastern port city of Trincomalee on Friday, but caused no casualties, Sri Lankan military sources said. Navy sources said investigators said they did now know how the attack was carried out on the ship, which was anchored in the harbor at the time. The attack took place 10 hours after the military says rebels exploded a bomb inside a cafeteria in the eastern town of Ampara - killing eight people and wounding 35 - and as elections for the provincial council in eastern Sri Lanka were set to begin. On Saturday, elections to appoint 37 members to the nation's Eastern Provincial Council were to begin at 1,022 centers in the eastern districts of Trincomalee, Ampara and Batticaloa. |
