(CNN) — Coalition troops targeting Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan have killed more than a dozen insurgents, the U.S.-led coalition reported on Friday.

The incident took place Thursday in the Garmsir district of the province, a major hotspot in the Afghan war. Soldiers had been targeting a Taliban insurgent involved in weapons smuggling, and had embarked on a search of compounds.

“During their search, Coalition forces were fired upon by an unknown number of insurgents from the compounds. Coalition forces responded with small arms and airstrikes, killing several of their attackers,” the coalition said.

Troops found machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, ammunition and AK-47s.
