WASHINGTON (CNN) — A U.S. military C-130 cargo plane — loaded with food and medicine — is on four-hour alert as it sits on an airstrip in Thailand, and is likely to be the first American relief flight into Myanmar on Monday, a senior U.S. military official told CNN. The White House announced earlier Friday that Myanmar officials have agreed to allow a U.S. cargo plane to land in Yangon on Monday. The senior military official said six Marine Corps and Air Force C-130s are currently at Utapao Air Base in Thailand, as are a dozen heavy-lift helicopters that could begin moving supplies immediately if additional permission is granted by the Myanmar government. Other military officials tell CNN planning is still under way for the first flight and that supplies are being flown into Utapao from U.S. military bases in the region. |
