BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — American and Iraqi troops over the last 24 hours
fought both Sunni militants in northern Iraq and Shiite militants in Baghdad’s
Sadr City, killing 13 of them, the U.S. military said on Friday.Twelve militants were killed Thursday in Sadr City, where battles have
raged for weeks between militias and soldiers. Soldiers targeted rocket teams
and armed militants. In one instance, troops killed three people who attacked
soldiers erecting security barriers.

“These barriers will improve security, life will get better for Sadr City
residents, and together, with the Iraqi Security Forces, we will bring the
criminals to justice,” said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, military spokesman.

In northern Iraq, troops on Friday killed one militant and detained eight
others in Baiji and Mosul during raids targeting al Qaeda in Iraq.
