More fighting in Baghdad's Sadr City; nearly 60 killed since SundayPosted: 05:38 AM ET
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) - Violence raged for a fourth straight day in Baghdad's Sadr City, leaving 11 more Iraqis dead on Wednesday despite a vehicle ban and tough security imposed across the capital by government security forces. Six people died in clashes between U.S. and Iraqi forces and members of the Mehdi Army, the militia of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. And five people were killed and 14 others were wounded when attackers fired at a tent of people mourning the death of a person killed in this week's fighting. The International Zone, the seat of U.S. power in Baghdad known as the Green Zone, was hit again Wednesday by "indirect fire," the U.S. Embassy said. There were no reported injuries in the indirect fire, the term used for rockets, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars, but the U.S. military says Shiite militants backed by Iran have been staging such attacks. Fighting in Baghdad's Sadr City has killed 59 Iraqis and wounded 205 since Sunday, and nine U.S. troops have died in Baghdad during the same period. In the latest incident on Tuesday, a Multi-National Division – Baghdad soldier was killed in a roadside bombing in northeastern Baghdad. |
