Police clash with Tibetan exiles in NepalPosted: 09:55 AM ET
KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) - Police clashed Monday with exiled Tibetans who were protesting last week's violence between police and anti-Chinese demonstrators in Tibet's capital, Lhasa. Police fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse 200 exiled Tibetans protesting in front of the United Nations office in Kathmandu on Monday afternoon, where earlier confrontations had left at least two people injured, eyewitnesses said. Earlier Monday, police said they arrested 48 exiled Tibetans in front of that office for obstructing traffic. An eyewitness, Susan Appleyard of Human Rights Watch, told CNN that police used batons, one of the of the protesters was taken to a hospital, and a monk was bleeding from a head wound. The protesters said they had gone to hand a memorandum to that office urging the United Nations to demand that the Chinese government "allow demonstrators to exercise their right to freedom of expression and assembly" and "refrain from use of excessive force against Tibetan protesters." |
