ATLANTA (CNN) –The Supreme Court of Georgia on Monday denied a request for a new trial for a convicted cop killer who received a stay of execution last year. The justices turned down the request of Troy Davis by a vote of 4 to 3, according the a press release by the Georgia Supreme Court. Davis was convicted in 1991 and sentenced to death for the 1989 murder of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail. Last year Davis was scheduled to receive lethal injection in July. Hours before his execution, a Georgia clemency board voted to give him a stay. The decision came after Davis’ defense attorneys argued that several witnesses who initially testified that they saw Davis fire the fatal shots had recanted and said they were coerced into fingering him. |
