L.A. police officer killed, another wounded in ongoing standoff

LOS ANGELES (CNN) - Scores of police were surrounding a house Thursday
for a second day after a man holed up inside told police he had killed three
family members, a Los Angeles police spokeswoman said.

A veteran SWAT team member was killed and another was injured in an
exchange of gunfire with the suspect about 12:30 a.m. Thursday after police
tried to enter the home, Smith said. They lobbed tear gas into the house.

The wounded officer was in surgery early in the morning, and was expected
to survive, she said.

The incident began about 9 p.m. Wednesday when the suspect called 911 and
told police had killed his relatives, said Officer Karen Smith. The man did not
identify who died, or offer other details, she said.
