Terror attack kills 1 and wounds 11 at Israeli shopping centerPosted: 03:50 AM ET
JERUSALEM (CNN) - A suicide bomber detonated explosives in a shopping mall in the southern Israeli town of Dimona Monday morning, killing at least one person and wounding 11 others, police said. Of the 11 wounded, one was seriously injured, two received moderate injuries and eight had light wounds. A police officer at the mall shot and killed a second potential bomber who was knocked down by the initial blast. Authorities plan to conduct a controlled explosion to neutralize the explosives belt he was wearing. The last reported suicide bombing in Israel was Jan. 29, 2007 on a bakery in the Red Sea resort town of Eilat. Three people died in the attack. The military wings of Palestinian militant groups Islamic Jihad and Fatah claimed responsibility for that bombing. Dimona is a community of about 33,000 located about 50 miles (79 km) south of Jerusalem. The Israeli nuclear program is hosted nearby at the Negev Nuclear Research Center, about 8 miles (12 km) to the southeast. |
