Bush administration notifies Congress of $20 billion Saudi arms packagePosted: 01:49 PM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN)- The Bush administration notified Congress Monday it intends to sell Saudi Arabia $20 billion in arms, the State Department said. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the deal included the proposed sale of 900 "joint direct attack munitions" worth close to $120 million. The notification to Congress initiates a 30-day review period during which members of Congress could block the sale. Some lawmakers have expressed concern about the transfer to Saudi Arabia of joint direct attack munitions technology. Critics argue the highly precise targeting capability offered by the system could threaten Israel. –From CNN State Department Producer Elise Labott |
